Does it need a hub?

For Matter/Apple Home use, you need a Thread border router (Aqara Hub M3, Apple TV 4K or HomePod). Fingerprint, PIN, NFC and key access all work standalone with no hub at all.

What happens when the batteries die?

You get low-battery warnings well in advance, and the mechanical keys always work as backup.

Is it right for South African doors?

It suits lever-lockset doors. Many SA doors use mortice locks — send us a photo first and we'll confirm fitment.
