Installing a SONOFF ZBMINI Behind a Standard SA Wall Switch

The SONOFF ZBMINI is one of the most useful little devices in the SONOFF range. It's a small Zigbee relay that fits behind your existing wall switch, turning any "dumb" light into a smart one — without changing how the physical switch works. Guests can still flick the switch on the wall. You can still control it from your phone, from Home Assistant, or via voice.

This guide walks through installing one behind a standard SA wall switch. It's not difficult, but there are two things that trip most people up: the neutral wire requirement, and the size of the SA back box. We'll deal with both.

Before you start — safety

If you're not comfortable working with mains electricity, stop reading and call a qualified electrician. 230V AC will kill you. This guide assumes you know how to safely isolate a circuit and verify it's dead before you touch anything.

You'll need:

  • A multimeter or voltage tester — non-negotiable
  • A flat and Phillips screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • A torch (you'll be working in the dark, obviously)
  • The SONOFF ZBMINI itself
  • A Zigbee coordinator already set up (SONOFF ZBBridge Pro, ZBDongle-Max, or similar)
  • Optional but strongly recommended: Wago 221 connectors for neat, safe joints

Which ZBMINI do you actually have?

SONOFF has released a few variants and they wire differently. Check the box:

  • ZBMINI (original) / ZBMINIR2 — needs a neutral wire at the switch. Best performance, most reliable. This guide covers this version.
  • ZBMINI-L / ZBMINI-L2no neutral required. Uses the load itself as a return path. Great for older SA houses without switch-neutrals, but has quirks with LED loads (below ~5W it may not power up reliably). Wiring is different — see our separate guide.

Most new SONOFF WiFi and Zigbee inline modules assume neutral. If you have no neutral at your switch, this is the single biggest thing to know before ordering.

Do you have a neutral wire at your switch?

Most modern SA homes (built post ~2010) have neutral at the light switch. Many older ones don't — the switch just interrupts the live wire on its way to the light fitting, and the neutral runs directly to the light.

How to check (with the circuit safely off, then briefly on again for testing):

  1. Isolate the circuit at the DB board.
  2. Remove the wall switch and pull it out gently.
  3. Look at the wires. You should see at least two wires — often three or four in a modern install.
  4. Match wire colours to the reference below:

If you see a blue (or black) wire capped off or bundled at the back of the box and not connected to the switch, that's your neutral. You have neutral. Proceed.

If the only wires present are two that both switch when the switch is flipped (a "loop-in-loop-out" arrangement with no neutral), you'll need either:

  • A ZBMINI-L2 (no-neutral variant), or
  • An electrician to pull a neutral through (usually not economical)

The SA back box problem

Standard SA wall boxes come in two common sizes:

  • 4x4 (100 × 100 mm) — plenty of room. ZBMINI fits with space to spare.
  • 2x4 (50 × 100 mm) — tighter. ZBMINI fits, but only just, and only if you're neat with your wiring.

The ZBMINI is 39 × 39 × 18 mm — it's genuinely small. But add wire nuts or badly folded conductors and a 2x4 box gets crowded fast. Wago 221 lever connectors are your friend here — they're much more compact than traditional connectors and let you release wires cleanly if you need to change something later.

Wiring the ZBMINI

Here's the full wiring at a glance — DB, ZBMINI, switch, and light fitting all in one view:

The ZBMINI has five terminals:

  • L in — Live from your DB (permanent live)
  • N — Neutral
  • L out — Switched live going to your light fitting
  • S1 — Switch terminal 1
  • S2 — Switch terminal 2

Standard wiring (single-gang switch, single light)

  1. Kill the power at the DB. Verify with your tester on the wires you're about to touch. Test the tester on a known-live source afterwards to confirm it's working.
  2. Remove the existing switch. Note carefully which wire went where before disconnecting.
  3. Identify:
    • The permanent live from the DB (test briefly with power on if unsure — should be live when the switch is off).
    • The switched live going to the light (only live when the switch is on).
    • The neutral (either connected to the switch or bundled in the box).
  4. With power off again, wire the ZBMINI:
    • Connect the permanent live to L in
    • Connect the neutral to N
    • Connect the switched live going to the light to L out
    • Connect the two switch terminals to S1 and S2 (polarity doesn't matter for a standard toggle)
  5. Reconnect the physical switch to S1 and S2.
  6. Neatly fold everything into the back box. Don't force it — if it's not fitting, redo your joints more compactly.
  7. Screw the wall plate back on.
  8. Restore power at the DB.

Testing before you pair

Flip the physical switch. The light should work exactly as it did before. If it doesn't, kill the power and re-check your wiring — most likely you've swapped L in and L out.

Pairing the ZBMINI

Once physical install is confirmed working:

  1. On your eWeLink app (or Home Assistant), put your Zigbee coordinator into pairing mode.
  2. On the ZBMINI, hold down the physical wall switch for about 5 seconds — the LED will start flashing. (Alternatively, press and hold the tiny pairing button on the ZBMINI itself.)
  3. The device should appear in eWeLink or your coordinator within 30 seconds.
  4. Name it something you'll remember six months from now ("Kitchen ceiling light", not "Switch 12").

If pairing fails: get the coordinator closer, or add a mains-powered Zigbee router (a smart plug on the same circuit works well) to strengthen the mesh.

Common problems

Light flickers or won't fully turn off. You've got a low-wattage LED and the ZBMINI-L (no-neutral variant). Not the ZBMINI (with neutral) — that one doesn't have this problem. Either install a bypass capacitor (SONOFF sells one) or switch to the neutral version.

Physical switch works but the ZBMINI doesn't respond in the app. Check pairing, check Zigbee mesh signal (LQI in Home Assistant, or the eWeLink device page). If LQI is below 50, add a router.

ZBMINI keeps dropping off the network. Almost always a mesh problem, not a device problem. Zigbee needs mains-powered "router" devices between your coordinator and your end devices, especially through walls. Smart plugs and mains-powered switches act as routers. Battery devices (sensors) do not.

The switch works backwards (up = off, down = on). Either flip the switch cover, or use the eWeLink app / Home Assistant to invert the state — much easier than rewiring.

Adding it to Home Assistant

If you're running HA with Zigbee2MQTT or ZHA, the ZBMINI shows up automatically once paired to the coordinator. You'll get:

  • A switch entity for the light
  • A sensor for link quality
  • (On some firmware versions) an event entity for physical button presses — useful for double-tap automations

Now you can automate it. Turn the porch light on at sunset. Turn the geyser off during peak Eskom tariff hours. Kill all the lights when you say "goodnight" to Google.

What next?

The ZBMINI is the gateway drug of home automation. Once you have one working, you'll want ten more. That's fine — Zigbee scales beautifully, and each additional mains-powered device makes your mesh stronger.
